Gallery Turquoise NorthSummer 2010Greetings Friends and Art Lovers,Welcome, or welcome back to my website. This summer in Cooper Landing, Alaska I am hosting my 6th annual summer art exhibition. This year we have a very special opening followed by a party, live music and multimedia. Please play the 70 second video on this page and/or see the written information below. Everyone is encouraged to come on down to the Kenai. Bring a sleeping setup and you are welcome to spend the night. The painting exhibition is especially strong this year as I am showing work from the 2009 season. Last summer I had 2 big commissions, one of the Upper Kenai River and the other of a portion of Kodiak Island. These got me back into my “classic” style – painting from projected satellite images in expressionistic brushed oil paint, my own unique version of photo realism. With Google Earth having raised consciousness worldwide, my early work from the 80s and 90s is now being recognized as prescient. Indeed, a whole new market has finally opened for this pioneering work. The good news is that I am back at it and works showing sections of the Kenai River, Kodiak and other locales in this classic style are highlighted in this year’s show. As always, I remain available for commissions on any area of interest. A recent example is a series showing Hamburg, Germany. Not only was last season a renewal of my classic style, I painted some of my best “pours” ever. Inspired by my flight up the coast from California as I stared down on an unusually cloud free archipelago of the Alaska Panhandle. From my window seat, I absorbed the vision of a watery ecotopia: an endless network of islands, rivers, and ocean channels that inspired the 2 series “Somewhere in Southeast Alaska” and “Ecotopia; Flooded River Ocean”.Having poured enamel actively since 1995, I have 15 years of a vocabulary of not painting brushed descriptions of what things look like, but rather actually making expressions of the phenomenon I have observed. A number of these new works are posted on this page.Last but not least, I have brought all of the small, very affordable works back from “Run Wild” where they were hanging for the last 4 seasons. So other than at The Kingfisher Roadhouse, “Downers” are only available at Milepost 49.5.So that’s the latest from Gallery Turquoise North. This coming fall, Gallery Turquoise South will be back in operation with participation in the Highway 62 Morongo Basin Studio Art tour. We will update the website as October draws near. Until then, come on down to the Kenai. My show always coincides with the second run of red salmon so bring your rod and an ice chest.See you here,Spelman Evans Downer
